d3

d3 is a javascript graphics library for the web.  Instructive examples for how to program in d3 can be found at the d3js.org website.  It can be added to WordPress pages using the Wp-D3 plugin.  The above slider and animated graphics are controlled by d3.

Henry A. Rowland (1848-1901) was the first president of the American Physical Society and a physics professor at Johns Hopkins University, where I obtained my PhD.  His precise diffraction gratings helped him and others to launch spectroscopic astronomy.  The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins is now named after him.  In the graphic, the geometrical setup of optical equipment is called the Rowland circle.  Light enters from the lower right.  It hits a diffraction grating on the lower left, diffracting the colors out from the original white light.  If the diffraction grating is curved slightly to follow a circle, the detector (top right) should be placed on the same circle, so that each color of diffracted light is focused when it hits the detector.  Moving the detector along the circle scans the colors.

I like how the symmetry of the two rotated coordinate systems play off each other, and are set against the simple perspective.
