d3 is a javascript graphics library for the web.\u00a0 Instructive examples for how to program in d3 can be found at the d3js.org<\/a> website.\u00a0 It can be added to WordPress pages using the Wp-D3 plugin.\u00a0 The above slider and animated graphics are controlled by d3.<\/p>\n

Henry A. Rowland (1848-1901) was the first president of the American Physical Society and\u00a0a physics professor at Johns Hopkins University, where I obtained my PhD. \u00a0His precise diffraction gratings helped him and others to launch\u00a0spectroscopic astronomy. \u00a0The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins is now named after him. \u00a0In the graphic, the geometrical setup of optical equipment is called the Rowland circle. \u00a0Light enters from the lower right. \u00a0It hits a diffraction grating on the lower left, diffracting the colors out from the original white light.\u00a0 If the diffraction grating is curved slightly to follow\u00a0a circle, the detector (top right) should be placed on the same circle, so that each color of diffracted light is focused when it hits the detector. \u00a0Moving the detector along the circle scans the colors.<\/p>
